Wayne Rooney hails Ayr United kid’s strike after comparison to Manchester United wondergoal

An Ayr United starlet has won praise from Wayne Rooney – after his stunning overhead kick drew comparisons with the former England ace.

Teenager Dylan O’Kane has become an online sensation after footage of his incredible strike was shared by United’s Football Academy.

The Friday night cracker saw O’Kane smash a first time effort into the top corner as Ayr’s Under 18s beat Dunfermline 3-0.

It was immediately compared to Rooney’s wonder hit in the 2011 Manchester derby, which later claimed the Goal of the Decade award for the Old Trafford club.

Winger O’Kane, who came off the bench to score twice, was stunned when the tweet drew a response from Rooney at the weekend.

The former Man United striker, now in charge of Derby County, hailed the goal as “quality”.

New Cumnock boy O’Kane, 17, told the Ayrshire Post: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw he’d replied – all the boys are buzzing about it.

“It was a good goal, I pressed high on their defender to force the mistake and just hit it first time as the ball’s come back in to me.

“Luckily it flew in the top corner.”

Proud mum Lynne, 37, a staff nurse at Ayr Hospital, added: “My phone has been lighting up all weekend.

“Dylan’s been right through the system at Ayr since he was nine years old and absolutely loves it.

“Getting that recognition from someone like Wayne Rooney is amazing and is also great for the Academy.

“It’s been a good few weeks for him because he also joined the reserve team for their game against Morton and came off the bench that day, so long may it continue.”
