Supercharged shop plan as mysterious bid is launched to combine three stores at Ayrshire retail park

A supercharged shop plan could see three stores combined into one at an Ayrshire retail park.

Bombshell blueprints released this week show that stores at Glencairn Retail Park in Kilmarnock could be merged into a 28,257 sq ft mega shop.

The retailer behind the bid is shrouded in mystery with little given away in documents submitted to East Ayrshire Council planners.

The three units being considered for the ambitious move are the former Brantano shop, which has been empty since the shoe retailer collapsed in 2016; the DW Sports store which was vacated after the firm went bust in 2020; and the third unit that’s part of the bid is Pound Stretcher — a store that is currently operational.

The discount retailer opened a new store in Fowlds Street in March last year but bosses insisted the Glencairn Retail Park shop wouldn’t be axed.

The new unit would sell food and non-food items and the applicant also wants to change part of the service yard at the rear to form a garden centre.

The entrance to the shop would be via the ex DW Sports doors with the Pound Stretcher and Brantano entries being transformed into fire exits.

If successful, the mega unit would sit alongside Dunelm, Poundland, Food Warehouse, TK Maxx and Halfords.

East Ayrshire Council planners will rule on the plans at a future date.

Pound Stretcher have been contacted for comment.
