China warns of ‘colossal’ COVID-19 outbreak if it opens up — NEWS.ru

A Chinese study has concluded that the Asian country might face as much as 630,000 infections a day if it followed the same COVID-19 policies as France and the US.

“The estimates revealed the real possibility of a colossal outbreak which would almost certainly induce an unaffordable burden on the medical system,” the research said.

“Our findings have raised a clear warning that, for the time being, we are not ready to embrace ‘open-up’ strategies resting solely on the hypothesis of herd immunity induced by vaccination advocated by certain western countries,” it added.

China is currently unable to lift travel limitations without a huge risk to the country’s health sector.

Much more efficient vaccinations are required for China to lift the restrictions.

The study was conducted by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and published in China CDC Weekly.

It was based on the COVID-19 prevention tactics of the UK, the US, France, Israel, and Spain.

The worst outcome would have been seen if the United States’ approach was taken into action with over 637,155 new cases per a single day.

Since the start of the pandemic China had a serious approach to COVID-19 policies as it was the first country to impose total lockdowns isolating complete cities from one another.

The new cases in China are close to 0 with around 100 infections a day across the whole country.

Earlier a new variant emerged in Africa. It was dubbed Omicron and some infected with it have already been spotted in Australia, the UK, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Botswana, Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy.
