China moves swiftly following Solomon Islands deal

Australia is being warned Chinese ships and aircraft will arrive in Solomon Islands within four weeks – following the signing of a deal between the two nations.

The move has caused significant concern within the federal government as the opposition has called out Prime Minister Scott Morrison for not stopping the deal earlier.

Experts say the Chinese government will be sending military forces to the Solomons during the election campaign.

They aim to capitalise on the caretaker period and match the development of bases in the South China Sea.
