Brazil’s Covid deaths on the rise for first time in 10 months

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Brazil rose 149 percent between December 2021 and January 2022, according to the Health Ministry’s latest epidemiological report. It was the first monthly increase since March 2021, which was one of the deadliest periods of the pandemic, with over 80,000 victims.

The figures, however, are still not complete. Deaths are tallied on the day they occur, and data shortfalls during weekends and holidays cause a discrepancy between the number of victims registered on a given day and real dates of death.

Current figures show that 6,778 Brazilians died from Covid in January, up from 2,726 one month before.
