Brazilian Senate expected to unclog diplomatic logjam

The Brazilian Senate will hold some 30 confirmation hearings this week for nominations to embassies, international organizations, government agencies, and federal courts.

There are presidential picks for 21 embassies —including Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Bolivia. Two other names are set to hold posts in the Commonwealth of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The Senate must also confirm nominations to the National Council of Justice (a sort of ombudsman of the Judiciary system) and to the National Film Agency (Ancine). Thirteen of the 30 names have already been confirmed by committees and only need a final nod from the Senate floor — which is all but a formality.
