East Ayrshire has the most CCTV per capita in Scotland.
Research has shown that the Ayrshire region has 84.3 cameras per 10,000 people — the most across the country, eclipsing Glasgow City (84.2) and South Lanarkshire (68.7).
The spot with the most CCTV in the UK per capita was the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham with roughly 1 CCTV camera for every 100 people.
A Freedom of Information request by Get Licensed has revealed that East Ayrshire has 1,035 cameras in operation throughout towns and villages.
Although it’s understood that 918 of those camera belong to the local authority’s facilities and property management, meaning that the majority of cameras in East Ayrshire are part of building security arrangements and aren’t in public spaces.
Data also unearthed that East Ayrshire Council was among the top 10 local authorities in the UK for the greatest expenditure on CCTV, coming in at 10th place after spending £367,073 maintaining and installing cameras in 2020. Only Renfrewshire (£380,016) spent more in Scotland.
Glasgow City has the most cameras in the UK — East Ayrshire fell to 21st in the UK for this measure.
While The City of London spent an eye-watering £7.05m on the upkeep and installation of cameras.
An East Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “The East Ayrshire Council public space CCTV system is in operation across East Ayrshire providing recorded images 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the purposes of crime detection and prevention, and in the interests of public safety, risk management and environmental protection.
“The council’s Risk Management Centre (RMC) maintains and manages the Council’s CCTV resources including:

“Signage alerting the public to the use of CCTV in the area is mounted within public view in the areas in which it is operational, including signs displayed on and in the vicinity of the Community Safety Van and re-deployable cameras.
“East Ayrshire Council upgraded existing equipment to digital between 2019- 2021, which required additional funding.
“The council is committed to ensuring that East Ayrshire is a great place to live and play and the CCTV system installed across East Ayrshire provides the best protection to our local communities.”
